APURBA KARATI
About
Apurba Karati is an emerging artist whose practice is largely figurative and expressionistic. Apurba’s psychologically charged work explores themes of aesthetics and identity and his experimental style draws from his exposure to different stages of his parents aging and the unaffluent conditions they lead their lives. Combining acrylics and oils , the versatility of Apurba’s style is only surpassed by the range of artistic influences that inform his art. He strives in all his work to capture an essential part of himself and his subjects through colour and form. His work includes still-life and landscapes, but Apurba tends to primarily focus on situational portraiture. His paintings and sculptures are, on first examination, noted for their exaggerated proportions and the corpulence of the human figures. The "fat people" is what they are often called by critics. Apurba explains his use of obese figures and forms as such: "An artist is attracted to certain kinds of form without knowing why. You adopt a position intuitively; only later do you attempt to rationalize or even justify it". He is an abstract artist in the most fundamental sense of the word, choosing what colours, shapes, and proportions to use based on intuitive aesthetic thinking. This being said, his works are informed by a Indian (Bengali) upbringing and social commentary is woven throughout his work. Having graduated from Birla Academy of Art & Culture with Honours, Apurba works full time as an artist and currently lives in Kolkata while he continues to participate in both local and international exhibitions.
